Trust Fund Scholarship Winners

Two students were awarded $1,000 scholarships from Mont Vernon trusts to continue their education for the upcoming school year. Former and current Mont Vernon residents have generously established several trust funds to remember their loved ones while helping our young adults launch into the futures.

  • Lily Byers was awarded the McCollom Scholarship from a trust established in 1991 when the McCollom Institute was dissolved.
  • Brinnly Barney was awarded a Skenderian Scholarship from a trust fund established in 1977 by Dr. George Skenderian and his wife Helen.

The Mont Vernon Trustees of Trust Funds hold the trusts that provide scholarships to post-secondary students. These scholarships are awarded both to continuing scholars and to graduating seniors, and any Mont Vernon resident pursuing an undergraduate degree may apply.

School Supply Drive at Congregational Church

The Mont Vernon Congregational Church is partnering with SHARE for a School Supply Drive in the month of August. If you’d like to help, we’ve placed a picnic basket by our front door for an easy donation drop-off. All donations will go to SHARE at the end of the month. For a list of what is needed, please click this link: bit.ly/mvcc-backtoschool (you will be taken to our church website where you’ll find a list as well as more information about SHARE.)

Guided tour of Purgatory Grove

Purgatory Grove, near Upper Purgatory Falls, was a major tourist site at the turn of the 20th century, with a dance hall, bowling alley and other buildings. The Mont Vernon Historical Society will give a guided tour of the area, finding remnants of these long-gone buildings, at 10 AM on Saturday, August 19. Meet at the “parking lot” located on the Lyndeborough side of the falls, on Purgatory Falls Road. (Note: You can't get there from Purgatory Road in Mont Vernon - you've got to go around via Salisbury Road.)

If you are interested in attending this free event, please contact MVHS President Anna Szok at annaszok@yahoo.com. Let me know your email address and interest, and I will keep you posted with pertinent details about the hike!
