Life as a child in Mont Vernon before World War II

When Jane Conant was a girl, her parents summered in Mont Vernon, on a house on Main Street. In 1986, 13 years before she died, she recorded some memories of life as a child in town from the mid 1930s to World War II.

Among the memories are how the automobile changed Mont Vernon's summer habits;  swimming at Scobie Pond in Francestown, which had a raft blown away in the 1938 hurricane; how "everybody smoked like fiends” including kids on the sly, with brands that have since disappeared; the town's 9-hole golf course and clubhouse; watching movies in Milford for 10 cents – plus “war tax” of 1 cent; and visiting George Coggins, who was a practicing blacksmith in town.
